Can Your Building Support Your Door Load?

If you’re putting a new door on an existing building or have special design requirements, the self-supporting header might be the right fit for you. Keep reading to learn more about what it can do for your building. 👇

The self-supporting header is a steel frame consisting of two wide-flange vertical columns and a web truss header system. It is generally used for two purposes – to provide additional structural support and to increase the usable clear opening size of the building.

Support the load of the bifold door.

With the self-supporting header, your door is mounted to the header rather than your building. This means that the load (weight) of the bifold door affects your building only a minimal amount. Often, this is a more cost-effective option than reinforcing your building columns and supports.

Increase the size of your clear opening.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Take a quick look at the gallery above and you’ll see exactly how a self-supporting header system helps increase the size of your clear opening. The header reaches past your roofline, allowing you to maximize the useful area of your doorway.
