Mike from Creative Doors partnered with us on this project; the Surrey British Columbia Public Works building. Door options added to this project included our auto-locking system, polycarbonate panels for natural light, and custom powder coated frame finishing.

We worked with architects throughout the project to design 8 bifold doors. From planning to construction, we provide valuable advice and suggestions to maximize the potential of your door and building.

For added safety, our Photo Electric Sensors created a curtain to ensure equipment of any size would be detected. Outside the building, the concrete pad in front of the doors was equipped with a pressure sensor. Pressure from equipment in front to the door would be detected and prevent the door from opening (avoiding damage to both machinery and the door).

As a growing steel manufacturer, Maverick Industries needed a door for their welding shop that would give them the interior headroom to operate an overhead crane. President and CEO Kyle Wiebe quickly pointed out their need for a custom solution – and Diamond Doors had the perfect fit with a 16’ x 16’ bifold door.

Bifold doors are usually mounted to the exterior of the building and open outward. They don’t take up any space inside the shop and leave plenty of overhead room for cranes and other equipment.

Low Maintenance Bifold Door Features and Design

The other advantage of choosing a bifold door was that it required less maintenance than an overhead. Kyle said that Maverick Industries had “had overhead doors in the past… with constant maintenance” that needed to be done.

Of course, maintenance on any door is inconvenient and costly, but for a manufacturing shop, it can also interfere with production time and output. However, a Diamond door changes that with low maintenance and reliable door features like greaseless hinges and durable lift cables.

Kyle says that “the overhead door was cheaper than the bifold, but when doing the cost analysis on the overall project, we realized that the bifold door was going to be a long term investment… [and] the return on investment was significantly better going to the bifold door.”

“My favourite feature would be the auto-locking system,” Kyle says. “It’s very nice to know that when it’s closed, it’s pulled tight and seals properly.”

Since the door was going to be installed on a south facing wall, the sales team recommended the polycarbonate sheeting option. Maverick Industries installed this semi-transparent paneling on the top half of their door, brightening the interior of their shop and ensuring their employees had a source of natural light.
