We are all familiar with the sinking realization that we’ve bought the wrong thing. When it’s something as simple as the wrong shoe size, we can usually shrug it off and try again. But when it’s a new bifold door for your farm shed or airplane hangar? That’s a price that none of us want to pay.
We want you to feel confident about upgrading your building with a bifold door, and to enjoy your new door when you use it. With that in mind, here are three important things to consider before you order.
#1 – Know which features and options are best for your project
Choosing the right features and options for your door helps you get the most out of your project.
Our bifold doors are designed with many standard features, giving you a door that’s built to handle the toughest conditions and work reliably for many years to come. These features provide everything you need to operate your door.
However, we also offer additional door options to make sure that your bifold door is a perfect fit for your building needs. (Keep reading for a list of the most common door options that farmers, pilots, and shop owners choose for their door.)
Our sales team is available to help you choose the right door options for your project. They’ll ask you questions about your building and how you plan to use it so that they can recommend the best features and options.
While many door options can be added to your door after installation, it’s usually more cost effective to order all your preferred door options when you first order your door. This is because adding options requires conversion kits and additional labor costs. When you order these options in advance, we install them before we deliver your door.
Common Door Option Combinations for Overhead Bifold Doors
How do you plan to use your building?
Machine maintenance? As a comfortable space to hang out in the evenings? If you are planning to heat (or cool) your building, energy efficiency is important. Our insulation package is a great choice to keep your shop or hangar comfortable all year around.
Do you use your bifold door often? If you’re moving your shop equipment, farm machinery, or airplane through your doorway regularly, consider the autolock system and remote opener package. These options provide quick and easy access to your building.
Want to brighten your space or customize the look of your bifold door? We offer a variety of options, including windows and polycarbonate sheeting for natural lighting, and custom cladding colours to finish the exterior of your bifold door. If you have custom finishing options in mind such as wood panels or custom sheeting, talk to our sales team and they’ll help design your door to fit.
Does your existing building need a little extra structural support? Or would you like to make your clear opening bigger than it is with your current door? Our self supporting header option can help with that!
Whatever your building needs, our sales team is available to help you walk through the available options and choose what’s best for your daily operations!
#2 – Where will you order your exterior finishing (like trims, cladding, and fasteners)
Diamond Doors offers optional trim, cladding, and fasteners for your bifold door. Here are a few things to consider when sourcing your exterior finishing.
Where will you purchase the exterior finishing (cladding) for your building? If you are planning a new building or refinishing the exterior of your existing building, we recommend ordering your cladding for your bifold door from the same supplier as your building cladding. This way, you can ensure a perfect colour match. We’ll provide the information you need to get the materials cut to length and a perfect fit for your door.
Will you be able to find the specialized fasteners you need to properly install the materials? Many customers find it difficult to purchase the specialized lengths of fasteners needed to properly install the bifold door exterior finishings at a reasonable cost, especially when they’ve also ordered our 3” insulation package. (This package requires 4” long self-drilling Tek Screws.) As a manufacturer, we are able to order these fasteners in bulk and provide you with a better price than purchasing them through a retailer.
#3 – What is your building’s power supply?
Making sure that your building is properly wired for your bifold door is the first step toward a successful bifold door installation. It ensures that your motor receives the right power supply and runs well for many years to come.
Our recent blog post, Wiring Your Building for Your Bifold Door, walks you through everything you need to know about your building’s power supply, and why it’s important to do it correctly.
